Another Saturday, another bookish rant๐๐. Welcome to another chapter of weekly special book lovers ๐๐.
The star rating system: a simple way to sum up our thoughts on a book, or an outdated habit that's due for a change?
The other day I saw a post on Instagram about whether book reviewers still made use of "stars" when reviewing books, and I was compelled to make this a topic on my book segment! So the question is, 'Do reviewers and generally book lovers still make use of stars when reviewing books?'
As a book reviewer myself, I love making use of stars, and I will never stop making use of them except a better system comes up for scaling books ๐.
It is also true that I correct my ratings accordingly. What do I mean by this? This is what I mean: when rating books, I go by my mood and excitement after completion of the book, and I immediately rate books. I may look back on my emotions after reading a particular book and correct my ratings.
I recently completed a book this week, and I initially rated it 3 stars, and upon writing the review, I had a shift (I can't adequately find words to describe what caused the shift or why I had a shift). I had to change my initial rating of 3 stars to 2 stars.
My ratings are made up of whole numbers like 1 or 2, and this is what I mean when I rate books from 1 to 5 stars.
1 Star ⭐ >>> I did not like the book one bit.
2 Stars⭐⭐ >>> The book was just bad/not okay for me; in other words, I struggled with the book.
3 Stars⭐⭐⭐ >>> It was an okay read.
4 Stars⭐⭐⭐⭐>>> I loved it and will recommend the book.
5 Stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ >>> I absolutely enjoyed the story, and it will always have a special place in my heart ♥
Moreover, I love the fact that I can access how I felt about a certain book just by looking at the star ratings I gave it.
To buttress my point of how important star ratings are, review sites such as Goodreads, Booksirens, Netgalley, and Amazon all make use of the star rating system, so I don't think the star rating system is going anywhere anytime soon ๐!
And with that, we have come to the end of this segment. See you next (or next) Saturday. Until next time, stay bookish and wonderful!!
Question of the Day: How important are star ratings to you when deciding what books to read?

๐ BOOK TITLE: DARK MATTER ๐ AUTHOR: BLAKE CROUCH ๐ THOUGHTS&OPINIONS : #LetterD of My Alphabet Challenge #FourteenthBookOf2024 So this novel followed the story of Jason Densen. Jason is a scientist and has been trying to put a macro object in superposition; in other words, Jason was trying to figure out if we can access other timelines other than our own. But that dream was cut short when he decided to settle down, have a family, and be responsible. He left his passion for scientific research in order to have a family, which is pretty cool if you ask me ๐. So it starts getting interesting when Jason1 gets kidnapped ๐ฎ mysterious, right? I am not going to say who kidnapped him, but if you have read the book, I am guessing you were as shocked as me when you found out. It turns out there are multiple versions of Jasons, and it turned bloody real quick. This book was nothing I expected. I was terrified to say the truth. I heard that there ...
Fabulous write-up!
ReplyDeleteThank you ๐๐ฅบ
DeleteEnjoy seeing other people’s star ratings as an avid reader myself!
ReplyDeleteMe too and I don't think the star rating system is going anywhere anytime soon ๐.
DeleteThese are very good questions and you make some good points. The star rating system can be incredibly helpful and equally flawed. But it's useful for now so what can we say.
ReplyDeleteExactly, the star rating system is incredibly helpful and equally flawed!
DeleteI loved learning about your star rating system in this post as we're all different when it comes to that stuff. And I definitely need to read more!
ReplyDeleteCheers, Ash :)

I find it useful to look for star ratings by others. It gives me an insight on how ppl reacted to the book. Yet, I myself do not like to rate the books I read, because I can never decide lol.
ReplyDeleteif only we can all be like you, the star rating system won't even exist ๐
